These new members took on the role of lead songwriters and it was then that the band moved from relying mainly on cover versions to a unique combination of classic, symphonic, progressive and psychedelic rock. However, their subsequent releases were not as successful and Laine and Warwick left the band.Īt the end of 1966, Justin Hayward, from Swindon, replaced Laine on lead guitar and vocals, and John Lodge, Justin’s partner on Brummie, replaced Warwick on bass and vocals.
